The Solent, a breathtaking body of water located between the Isle of Wight and the south coast mainland, is approximately 20 miles long and 5 miles wide.
With Chichester Harbour to the East and Hurst Castle and the famous ‘Needles’ to the west, it is a sheltered expanse of water with an extensive maritime history, significant naval presence, and modern, thriving ports like Portsmouth and Southampton.
This area boasts a wealth of picturesque and historic harbours such as Cowes, Bembridge, Yarmouth, Lymington, Beaulieu, and the Hamble.
To the East, the saltmarshes of Chichester Harbour and Langstone provide a stunning natural environment, while further to the West, Newtown Creek nature reserve, and the impressive cliffs of Alum Bay and the Needles showcase the area’s natural beauty and diverse history.
Southampton is a renowned world yachting centre
The Solent has become a globally recognized hub for yachting due to its abundant leisure harbours, marinas, semi-sheltered waters, and excellent road and rail connections, as well as its proximity to London and the southeast.
The region hosts a plethora of yachting events throughout the year, including the famous Cowes Week sailing regatta held annually in August.
